States and Union Territories
India, a union of states, has a parliamentary system of government and is a sovereign, secular, democratic republic. The President is the Constitutional Head of the Union's Executive. In the States, as the President's representative, the Governor is the Head of the Executive. In the states, the system of government closely resembles that of the Union. In the country, there are 29 states and 8 territories of the Union. The Union Territories are administered by the President by an appointed Administrator. Union Territories and Capitals
India currently has 8 territories in the Union and 28 states. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has been bifurcated into two J & K and Ladakh Union Territories (UT). A reorganization act passed by Parliament on 5-6 August 2020 formed the newly formed Union Territories. There have been currently 8 Union Territories in India.
